This past weekend I had the opportunity to hop a plane to Utah so that I could go through the Mt Timpanogos Temple with my niece for her first time. She is doing this in preparation to serving a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Oakland, CA mission.
When I walked out of the secure area of the airport I was delighted to see 3 large groups of people holding signs saying "welcome home Elder...." This is not a common occurrence in just any ole airport especially not 3 at the same time. Utah is special this way. All three sets of family members and friends had the biggest happiest smiles on their faces and looking eagerly past everyone to find their Elder. I could feel their excitement and was so happy for them and their reunion.
The next day I was in the House of the Lord with family members and remembering the joyous reunions of the previous day. As I thought of my niece and the choices and promises that she was making I couldn't help but think of the fantastic reunion we will have when we pass through mortality into the presence of our Heavenly Father. I believe it will be similar to those families waiting at the airport for their loved ones who sacrificed 2 years of their lives to serving the Lord and then returning with honor home to their families.
When we are baptized we promise to take the name of Jesus Christ upon us. Taking this name upon us is similar to putting on the missionary name tag. It is a commitment to be like the savior and to serve him. We too have a mission and a purpose to fulfill while we are here in mortality. We too will have to give a report and accounting of our time spent here. We can pray and ask our loving Father what that specific purpose is and he will guide us to it. After all, he is our father and he wants us to be successful. I imagine that when we "step off the plane" or pass through the veil to eternal life we will be greeted with friends and family whose faces I imagine to be just like those waiting at the airport. Full of love and joy at the return home of their faithful missionary to hug, embrace and give thanks for your job well done. It is my goal to "return with honor" so that I may be worthy of such a welcome home.
