How do you keep 13 teenage boys on task and quiet in a library? It's actually not too hard for the first 2 1/2 hours, but the last 1 1/2 will keep you on your toes. For the citizen in the community merit badge the boys had to do 8 service hours. My friend who is on the ball with all things scouting found something for all the boys to do together. How awesome is that? I love being surrounded by awesome people. All I had to do was show up for 2 hours and keep the boys in-line. The boys had to take all the books in the kids' section off the shelf and clean them. They also got to stamp books out of circulation.
Towards the end the boys thought they were pretty smart and pretended to be working. Like I don't know this trick. Like I didn't use to go in the bathroom at night, turn on the water and make brushing noises with my toothbrush so that my parents would think I was actually brushing my teeth. HA! Did I have them fooled! Until one day I realized that the amount of effort I was expending on pretending to brush my teeth was the same as actually brushing them. Sad, sad day of realization.
The boys were good and got most of the books done in the kids section. At the end when everyone lost steam and started pretending they were still working, all I had to do was give them the side glance and say "really?" Which was met with a surprised look on their face because they thought the rouse was so convincing. Silly boys. We have another 4 hour shift coming up next week and then we are done with that badge. Yahoo! You would be surprised at just how dirty library books are!
