We were in opening exercises of yw. We needed to practice the song we will be singing at camp as a stake. The sheet music we were given was several pages long so I just typed out the words on a sheet of paper to hand out to the girls. Last week they got to listen to the song for the first time. The camp director only had her phone with its puny little speaker - not fit for a gym overflow classroom. She showed her mad resourceful skills and grabbed a metal bowl from the kitchen to use as an amplifier. Genius. Well, this week she brought a speaker - but it had the wrong connection. Sometimes you just can't seem to win for loosing. She got resourceful again and emailed the song to another teacher who had a speaker for her iPad. We were now in business. My meager voice and I stood at the front to lead everyone. Luckily the camp director joined me and together the 2 of us pretty much sang that song to the girls. I drew strength by having someone do something hard with me (letting people hear me sing is one of the scariest things for me). Being able to read the notes along with the words is a great value when you are trying to learn a song -which we didn't have. When you're not sure how high or low to sing it's hard to lead out with a strong voice. There were a couple girls and leaders trying - their mouths were moving and some sound was escaping, but it was a very small effort. By the second verse we rallied some encouragement and more voices joined us as the song became more predictable.
Come Unto Christ
Jenny Phillips
We can feel His pow’r
We know that He lives
We can feel the joy His pathway gives
We need Him in our lives
He’s our hope He is our guide
Come and join us in His gospel light
Come unto Christ
Come unto Christ
Learn of His life
walk by His side
Come unto Christ
live in His light
leave the world behind
And come, come come
Come unto Christ
His teachings bring us peace
His counsel keeps us safe
His standards lead to joy and give us strength
we want to share His love
we want everyone to know
We can’t hide the precious light we hold
Come unto Christ
come unto Christ
learn of his life
walk by His side
Come unto Christ
live in His light
leave the world behind
And come, come, come
Come unto Christ
come
come
Come

ChristAs we sang that last verse, a perfect moment of clarity washed over me and when the song was over, I shared it with the girls.
We started the song and everyone was shy and unsure how to sing the song - it's like the invitation to learn of Christ's life and follow him. We are unsure how to do it and our effort starts out small, but as we try our best we gain more knowledge and confidence - just like they did by the second verse. When we sang the song for the second time, everyone had much more confidence in how to sing the song. The voices got stronger and the song got more beautiful as we continued to try our best. When we live in His light we will gain knowledge and confidence. Following Christ gets easier and as each voice got stronger it gave courage to the girl sitting next to them and they got stronger too. That's what the strength and sharing the light is all about in the song. We got to live the example while singing about it. Pretty cool! Hopefully they felt how cool it was too.
I also realize that sharing it isn't nearly as cool as living it, but when I read back over this, those feelings and impressions will wash over me again as they did this day. It's like my own little memorial stone from the story of the Israelites crossing the Jordan River on dry ground (OT lesson 18). Something to help me and my posterity remember what the Lord has done. Ooooh, look at that- 2 moments of clarity for the price of 1 ;0) The gospel is just too exciting sometimes - for real!
