Last week we got some snow! We don't get good snow very often. Usually it will snow a bit and the sun will come out and melt all the snow an hour later. So, when we get 4 inches and it sticks, that is really fun. We didn't get to go redneck sledding this year though because it was too hard to get to the 4wheelers. The kids had to settle for sledding the old fashion way and making snow men and having snowball fights. School was cancelled and it was like a little early Christmas gift to the kids. The boys and I had to go out that morning around 9 to get to an orthodontist appointment. The roads were covered in ice and people were going about 10 miles an hour. It is a pretty scary venture being on the road with people that have absolutely no idea how to drive in snow and ice. It was an exercise in patience for sure so we cranked up the Christmas tunes and enjoyed the ride. We past 6 cars that slid off the road in a ditch on our way and watched people slide around. It was a good opportunity to explain to my oldest boy the do's and don'ts of driving in the snow and ice and I had many live examples to point out along the way. Good times. I just kept thinking how school had gotten cancelled at 5 that morning and no one in the city seemed to care about cleaning up the roads for travel. We were on the main road that goes between Abq and RR and a major employer is on that road. What the heck? One of the drawbacks to not having a lot of snow and ice is that you have no clean up services. So, you are stuck with it. No one was even throwing down salt or dirt until that afternoon and even then it was only in intersections and a couple of streets. What did this lack of clean up cause? 3 days of missed school. There was almost no snow left 2 of those days and only a few side streets still had ice on them and they closed school. People that have lived places where it really snows just laughs and laughs. Jared went sledding with a friend that just moved from Indiana where they get 14 inches of snow and don't cancel school so his family were scratching their heads at the closure. The 3 missed days created a mess for finals and plays and marching bands and all the concerts and events that happen the last 2 weeks of school. But, Hey! We got snow and we played in it and had fun! Now it's raining and we are hoping that it will turn into snow. :0)
