Sweet 16

Yesterday was the day MJ has been waiting for....her 16th birthday.  Her day did not start off all that great.  Honestly, does anyones birthday day start out that great?  I hate mine.  Have since I was a tween and it was nothing but a disappointment and reminder of just how much of a loser I was.  There's just so much expectation for the day that can rarely be lived up to.   Case in point. The magical, life altering, right of passage, sweet 16.  Emma is a hermit like her parents so throwing some big bash was out of the question, so what to do?  How could we possibly avoid lame sauce?  To make matters even more lame is the added bonus of both her parents having surgery days before the blissful event....AND she shares this date with her parents anniversary.  So really, we should just accept lame and move on, shouldn't we?  Well, I had to try.  I couldn't have her sitting in therapy later in life blaming her life on the streets and hard drugs on the fateful sweet 16 that wasn't sweet.  hahaha Luckily her best friend contacted me and had a couple of ideas because she was not about to let her friends birthday be a horrible disappointment.  MJ decided that since she wasn't having some huge party that, naturally, she should be able to take some sort of trip with her friend, naturally.  What the heck?  A trip?  To where?  One of my favorite movies in Taken, I think not!  She really wants to go back and visit the state of her birth, CA.  We have friends that recently moved there that would be fun to visit and an ocean to go play in.  There was no way I was going to send those 2 by themselves so, the compromise is that I would go with them.  We kept it a secret from her until last night at dinner.  So....back to her day not starting out well.  I am unable to drive anywhere and Nate went back to work and MJ had to go to school.  So, getting anything for her was not going to happen.  She was bummed that we didn't think we could get me out of the house to go to dinner and this was all enough to get her so bummed that she couldn't even think of a dessert that my neighbor said she would go pick up for us.  She left for school and then had to return home because she forgot the charger for her laptop.  Isn't it funny how when you've got a bad attitude your day just seems to stay on that course and you get more reasons to have a bad attitude?  Anyway, my neighbor was a dear and went and got a mustache present that Jordyn wanted to get for her sister and tracked down a cheesecake for Emma and I made plans to get a shower and get dressed so we could go out to eat.
We picked up MJ's best friend, Jane, at the train station and headed out for Italian...which is Emma's favorite.  She was reluctant to try a new place but it was what could work for meeting Nate after work. Ethan and Jordyn were being silly saying that their face was their present to MJ.  Nate and I also had to get a pic together because it was, after all, our anniversary.  Without us there would be no birthday to celebrate.  I was out in public with my bedazzled tiny tim crutches and Nate had to sit in the parking lot for a few extra minutes with an ice bag on his stitches before he could muster the strength to walk in.  We were quite the gimp pair. We managed to do the impossible.  Pull of a surprise that was worthy of a 16th birthday.  She had no idea that I booked the flight and we were heading to CA in June.  I even faked her out and put the tickets in a work out dvd because she has been wanting to get in shape.  lol  She didn't fall for it though and immediately opened the case assuming that it was a decoy.  Lamesauce avoided! YES!  There will be plenty of other things she can tell to her future therapist, but her 16th birthday will not be one of them. ;0)
