Yesterday was one of those days where absolutely everything that could possibly need to be done must be done on that day. I really don't think one more thing could have fit.
I went straight from a funeral to the oral surgeon with Jared. He had (for lack of better terminology) a broken mucus gland on the inside of his lip that has been bothering him. The surgeon is a friend and suggested that since we were already there we may as well get this thing taken out right then. Poor Jared was not mentally prepared for that scenario. We also took the opportunity of his mouth already being numbed and operated on to fix his tongue that was tied down a little too much. That's an easy little fix with a laser. J thinks this is going to help him with his hobby of speaking in different accents. haha Needless to say, poor J's mouth is a mess right now. I can't believe he actually went to school today.
I went right from the surgeons office to ice skating lessons with my littlest. By this point I feeling like the humane thing to do would be put me out to pasture, but the day was not over. Oh no, not even close.
What did I come home to? That pesky little campaign sign that should have been turned in on Monday. Ethan woke up yesterday vomiting with a fever so I thought it was something that I didn't have to worry about anymore. Nope, not so lucky. Life had returned to his little body and the only thing on his mind was getting this poster made and taken to school. It was 8pm. There really is no rest for the wicked.
I asked him what his slogan was. He was bummed that the superhero thing was already being used by his buddy, so this is what he came up with. It's 8pm, I'm like....whatever dude. The only problem is that he wanted to make an army guy. I asked him to explain what this would look like and I quickly surmised that if we went with this plan he would likely be suspended from school on some zero tolerance policy. I had to explain to him that we didn't live in that kind of world anymore. He really wanted the guy on the poster to be pointing so I had a flash of genius....that no one in elementary school gets.....but hey......Uncle Sam wants you......and most importantly.....he's pointing....Yes! Win! We even put my little man's face in there.
While I had Ethan gluing all the little letters on his campaign poster, I had a bag of apples to deal with. They were from a friends orchard and they were all grounders. They had to be dealt with because the holiday weekend is coming up and I have no other opportunity. All these apples were small and they had a lot of bruising and worm holes and live worms! Serious yuck! My husband finally made it home in the middle of the apple mess and wondered at the sanity of the decision I had made to take this project on when I had other things to do. I was stressed out and it was all my own doing and I knew it and hated it. The apples were proving to be too much work for the effort. My husband gave me permission to throw all the apples away and forget about it. That was all I needed. Permission to quit. Sometimes I just need to know that it's ok to quit so that I wont quit. :0) Because I'm seriously incapable of quitting.... and besides, I had some crazy awesome helpers....that should have been in bed by this point. I couldn't live with myself if I wasted all those apples. Waste not want not.
Who else had an emergency? My oldest. We had bought a dress that needed an extension put on the slip. It is one of those sheer dresses with the slip that is really short underneath. I was lucky to find a pretty close color match to add extra fabric to it. Once it's under the sheer fabric you wont even notice. Well, she needed the dress asap. So I had her work on cutting out the fabric and pinning it onto the existing slip while I got the apples into the crockpot for apple butter.
Today is a new day with new challenges, but I did get that apple butter finished. I just had to put it in the jars and can it this morning. After all that work I got 2 half pints and 2 pints canned. It was worth it, have you tried apple butter? That's apple gold right there!
