Mixtape

While I was at physical therapy this morning I was listening to a song that I have heard several times before, but not really heard what it was saying.  When I actually listened to it I realized that I loved the message.

I'm not sure if you've noticed, but I have a little pep talk through music on my playlist.  Whatever happened to the days of mixtapes anyway?  Do people still make them? The themes of the songs have been going along with what I've been thinking and talking about lately.  I'm pretty tricky like that :0)

So, how did I miss this song?   A perfect practical example of these next couple of scriptures:

"having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear yet not? and do ye not remember? ~Mark 8:18

"For this peoples heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them." ~Matthew 13:15

Now, I wasn't needing to be spiritually healed, but when thinking about what having ears that hear and eyes that see really means, my not hearing the message in a song is a perfect example.  In fact a lot of songs are written that way.  Only if you are looking for the message will you find it.  Take for example "What if" that is on my playlist.  Are you thinking about a romantic relationship while listening to it?  Or, can you hear the message of coming together and understanding each other?

I wanted to put the song "caught in the storm" by the ggdolls but it wasn't avail without a live concert, so some of the lyrics will have to suffice:

"I was taught to always turn the other cheek
And you know I took the beating and I stayed up on my feet
And this faith is getting heavy
But you know it carries me
From the streets to the river
Where the broken dreams flow out into the sea

I keep on looking but somethings always missing
I keep on looking for something bigger than me
To the saints to the sinners, all the losers and the winners
Yeah, we're all just looking for something, something to believe in

...I'll give you everything that you ask of me
And I'll give you all I have if it makes you believe
Cause I'm caught in the storm
That we call love"

I was able to put another song off the same album that has a message about not giving up that will have to do in place of the one that I wanted.  Are these songs perfect?  We know from the scriptures and the parable of the 10 virgins that we can't give anyone anything that will make them believe.  But we also know that to loose yourself is to find yourself and giving up all that we have is required for the treasures of Heaven.  So, I still love the songs and they each have something positive and uplifting about them.  I can't imagine a life without song.

So, are you blindly obedient or are you obedient because you can see?

Can you feel what is happening?  Can you feel the ground swell of good overcoming evil.  We may not win the battle, but we are going to win the war.  The only question is what side are you on. (Elder Holland gave a great talk about that -I don't remember when or what it's called)  I have said this before, but I believe it more than I ever have.  It goes something like this: "you don't go to war with the army you wish you had, you go with the one you've got."

That's why we have to teach each other the doctrines.  To mourn with each other.  To build and lift each other and help each other to hold on tight with both hands to the iron rod.  To build the perfect spiritual army that will overcome evil.

"I threw a line out to pull you to me, if you don't get it, then you don't get it..."

It doesn't matter if you're a 'broken vessel' like Elder Holland talked about, we need you.  The Lord needs you.  Don't give up, I'll keep the car running.
